Talk to Your Tunes: Spotify Rolls Out Voice Control for AI DJ

Spotify is giving its Premium users greater control over the music curated by its AI DJ feature with the rollout of a new voice command update. Starting today, subscribers can personalize their listening experience by using spoken English commands to guide the AI DJ, rather than relying solely on its auto-generated playlists based on past listening habits.

To access the new feature, users simply need to press and hold the ‘DJ’ button located in the bottom-right corner of the screen while using the AI DJ. Once they hear a beep, they can issue verbal instructions such as, “play me some electronic beats for a midday run,” or “surprise me with some indie tracks I’ve never heard before.”

Previously, the DJ button only shuffled to a new song without offering any input on what came next. Now, users can request specific artists, genres, moods, or even vibe-based playlists inspired by text prompts—a feature similar to Spotify’s AI Playlist beta launched last year. For instance, commands like “play me some music to soundtrack my life as a movie” are now supported.

While the update marks a significant step toward user-directed listening, it comes with limitations. The voice command function is currently the only way to guide the DJ’s choices—posing challenges for users in quiet or public environments where speaking out loud isn’t ideal. For those looking to hear a specific track, Spotify still recommends searching for it directly.

The update represents Spotify’s ongoing investment in AI-driven personalization tools while giving users more agency over their audio experience.
