When Dr. Fatai Kayode Lawal walked into the modest offices of a newly founded reinsurance company 40 years ago as its very first employee, no one could have predicted that he would one day return, decades later, to lead it into a new era. Today, as Continental Reinsurance Plc celebrates its 40th anniversary, Lawal has taken the reins as Managing Director and CEO of its Nigerian operations, completing a remarkable full-circle journey marked by resilience, transformation, and purpose.
His appointment is not just symbolic, it is strategic. Lawal brings a rare combination of institutional memory, hands-on experience, and bold vision to one of Africa’s most iconic reinsurance brands. With a background that spans broking, direct insurance, and reinsurance, his professional trajectory reads like a blueprint for navigating and mastering the ever-evolving African insurance landscape.

At the core of his leadership philosophy are two values he holds sacred, integrity and excellence, what he calls character and competence. These are not just abstract ideals for Lawal, they are working principles that have shaped his decades-long career. “Integrity builds trust,” he says simply. “Even when it’s inconvenient, it is the foundation. And excellence means never settling, constantly improving, learning, and delivering quality.”
This mindset has allowed Lawal to rise through the ranks with credibility and clarity, earning a reputation not only as a technical expert but also as a strategic leader with heart and humility.
A Homecoming Steeped in Legacy
For Lawal, this leadership role is personal. “I was part of the founding management team,” he says. “I remember when Continental Re was just an idea, then a vision, and then a company trying to find its footing. I’ve seen its storms, its breakthroughs. Leading it today is an honour, and a responsibility I carry with deep pride.”
As Continental Re transitions to a Pan-African holding structure, Nigeria remains its nerve center, a strategic hub rich in talent and innovation. Under Lawal’s leadership, the Nigerian entity is set to play a critical role in driving the Group’s broader vision of integration, excellence, and sustainability. “We are not just a part of the group,” he notes. “We are its engine. Our Centres of Excellence, in energy, engineering, marine, serve the entire continent. And in turn, we draw from the strength of our regional peers.”
Navigating New Risks with Innovation
West Africa’s risk landscape is rapidly changing. From climate-induced disasters like flooding to regulatory reforms that demand agility and compliance, the challenges facing today’s reinsurers are complex and relentless. But Lawal sees these not as threats, but as opportunities to innovate.
“Our response is proactive,” he explains. “We’re partnering with regulators like NAICOM and industry bodies such as NIA and WAICA. We’re also developing forward-looking products tailored to these emerging realities. Risk is evolving, and so must we.”
Balancing Digital Growth with Technical Excellence
In an era of digital disruption, Lawal is keen to modernize Continental Re’s operations without diluting the technical depth and credibility that have defined the brand for four decades. “Digital transformation isn’t a buzzword for us, it’s a strategic tool. We’re deploying smart solutions to enhance access, improve turnaround, and deepen customer relationships. But our foundation remains our technical expertise and reliability.”
People at the Heart of Progress
Despite the waves of technological advancement, Lawal insists that the company’s greatest asset remains its people. Building future-ready talent is one of his top priorities. “We’re investing in our people through mentorship, leadership development, and a culture of continuous learning. A company is only as strong as the people who carry its mission every day.”
A Vision for the Future
Asked what legacy he hopes to leave, Lawal doesn’t speak of titles or tenure. Instead, he paints a picture of impact, a more innovative, customer-responsive, and Africa-centric Continental Re. “I want to be remembered for honouring our past while preparing this company for the future, a future where we remain the most trusted reinsurer in the region, embedded in Africa’s growth story, and driven by values that never go out of style.”
