In a groundbreaking move targeted to revolutionise Africa’s security capabilities, Saifullahi Babangida, Chairman and Group CEO of Vinicius Group, has officially launched Vinicius International at Abuja on August 6th. Vinicius International is a Nigerian based security solutions company with a mission to drastically reduce Africa’s dependence on imported security hardware.

Licensed by the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON), Vinicius International has established a state-of-the-art armoured vehicle assembly line and an integrated surveillance solutions centre at Abuja. Positioned as a strategic arm of Vinicius Group, the company delivers an end-to-end, solitary security solutions tailored to Africa’s evolving security demands.
Speaking at the unveiling, Babangida described the facility not just as a manufacturing plant, but as a symbol of African sovereignty and security sustainability.
The chairman of Vinicius Group stated:
“Africa has the expertise, talent and determination to secure itself. This facility is about more than hardware, it’s about sovereignty, jobs, and building the skills required to protect our nations using African solutions.”

According to ThisDay, Africa’s military spending soared to $51.6 billion in 2023, marking a sharp 22% rise within just a year. Despite this, over 95% of the continent’s security hardware continues to be sourced from Russia, China, the United States and Europe. This dependence leaves African nations vulnerable to geopolitical supply chain disruptions, often delaying critical national security operations. Vinicius International, therefore is determined to shift that narrative, and close the gap.

The Abuja-based facility will manufacture tactical armoured vehicles engineered for African terrain and security challenges, while integrating advanced surveillance systems, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and cutting-edge access control solutions. The company also operates an Advanced Security Command and Control (ASCC) division, training security personnel to deploy and maintain these systems independently.
Its impact is already being felt. In January 2024, Vinicius International delivered over 1,000 armoured vehicles to Nigerian security forces, in what some security analysts described as “a decisive step toward security self-reliance.”
“This isn’t just another manufacturing company. Vinicius is bridging a decades-old capability gap and giving Africa a genuine shot at shaping its own defence future.” Noted a senior defence expert in Abuja.
For Babangida, his vision extends well beyond Nigeria’s borders. With conflict hotspots rising across West and Central Africa, and with countries like South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo increasing their defence budgets, Vinicius International is positioning its Abuja base as a regional production and logistics hub.
The company also seeks strategic partnerships with international manufacturers, creating a platform for technology transfer, local capacity building, and job creation.
“Every vehicle we build and every system we deploy brings us closer to a secure future, driven by African solutions and African hands.” Babangida revealed during the launch.
Looking ahead, Vinicius International’s goal is to expand its tentacles across West Africa, defining a future where domestic solutions power African defence.
At the close of the launch, Babangida left no doubts about the company’s direction.
“This is just the beginning. Africa’s security future must be built in Africa, by Africans, and for Africans, and we are proud to be leading that transformation.” The Vinicius Group CEO closed his remarks.
