Tony Elumelu Commits ₦25bn to Lagos Food Security Drive

Nigerian business leader and philanthropist Tony Elumelu has pledged ₦25 billion to support a new Lagos State food initiative focused on strengthening local agriculture and tackling food insecurity.

The initiative will directly boost farming, processing, and distribution efforts within the state particularly among smallholder farmers and agro-entrepreneurs. It’s a strategic move that aligns with Elumelu’s broader mission to drive inclusive economic development through entrepreneurship.

The ₦25 billion commitment, which comes through the Tony Elumelu Foundation and other partner entities, is expected to fund infrastructure, agro-tech adoption, training, and access to capital for thousands of stakeholders in the food value chain.

Lagos, despite its size and influence, remains heavily reliant on food imports. This program targets that imbalance, aiming to transform the state into a self-sustaining food hub through local production and innovation.

Elumelu, known for backing over 15,000 African entrepreneurs through his foundation, stated that food security is not just a national priority but a private-sector responsibility. His latest move reinforces the growing role of business leaders in shaping social outcomes beyond boardrooms.

The project is also expected to create thousands of jobs, empower women and youth in agribusiness, and make nutritious food more affordable for Lagosians.

In a time when Nigeria faces growing economic pressure, inflation, and food shortages, Elumelu’s intervention signals a shift toward proactive, private-sector-led solutions.
