Sidi Ould Tah Becomes AfDB President, Sets Bold Agenda

The African Development Bank has entered a new era with the swearing in of Dr. Sidi Ould Tah as its 9th President on September 1, 2025, in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. He succeeds Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, who led the Bank for ten years.

Ould Tah, a Mauritanian economist and experienced development expert, has spent his career driving reforms and mobilizing resources for sustainable growth. His appointment comes at a time when Africa faces urgent needs in infrastructure, finance, technology, and stability.

Founded in 1964, the African Development Bank is the continent’s leading financial institution for promoting growth and social progress. It has financed major projects in energy, transport, agriculture, health, and education, playing a vital role in shaping Africa’s development agenda.

In his inaugural speech, Ould Tah outlined a “first 100 days” plan focused on listening to stakeholders, launching reforms, strengthening partnerships, and delivering quick, practical results. He noted that the Bank should remain focused on areas where it can make the greatest impact.

A key part of his vision is a new investment pillar for peace. He stressed that lasting growth cannot happen without stability, making peace and security central to the Bank’s mission.

He also called for broader partnerships, reaching beyond traditional donors to include private investors, pension funds, and sovereign wealth funds.

This leadership change is seen as a positive step for Africa. With reforms and stronger partnerships, AfDB under Ould Tah aims to unlock new opportunities and support sustainable prosperity across the continent.
