Small Farms, Big Impact: TracTrac’s Innovative Approach to Agricultural Mechanisation

In the heart of Nigeria’s agricultural landscape, where smallholder farmers grapple with limited access to modern tools and high operational costs, TracTrac Mechanisation Services Limited is spearheading a transformative movement.

Founded in 2019 and incorporated in 2020, TracTrac has swiftly emerged as a pivotal force in bridging the mechanisation gap that has long hindered agricultural productivity across Nigeria and Sub-Saharan Africa.

At the helm of this initiative is Chief Executive Officer, Godson Ohuruogu, whose leadership is steering the company towards its mission of connecting farmers with affordable technology, skilled service providers, and innovative financing solutions. Under his guidance, TracTrac is not merely offering mechanisation services but is committed to restoring dignity and unlocking prosperity for smallholder farmers across Nigeria and Africa.

“Our mission at TracTrac is to provide smallholder farmers with the tools, knowledge, and financial solutions they need to succeed in a modern agricultural landscape,” said Ohuruogu. “By leveraging technology, strategic partnerships, and policy advocacy, we are not just delivering mechanisation services but building a resilient ecosystem that empowers farmers for future generations.”

A cornerstone of TracTrac‘s strategy is the Improving Smallholder Farmers’ Access to Small-Scale Agricultural Mechanisation (ISSAM) initiative, launched in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation. This ambitious five-year programme aims to directly engage 135,000 smallholder farmers and enable close to 5,000 new and existing Mechanisation Service Providers (MSPs) to become active participants in the rural economy. The initiative emphasizes affordability and appropriateness of technology, prioritizing power tillers and the locally manufactured Tryctor, a three-wheeled mini-tractor uniquely suited for smaller plots and tight planting windows standard across Nigeria’s rural landscapes.

TracTrac’s approach extends beyond the provision of equipment. The company operates through a community cluster–led service model powered by TracTrac Plus, a digital platform that uses GPS-enabled IoT technology to match farmers with nearby MSPs in real time. This platform ensures that services are delivered efficiently, often within 48 hours of booking, and at prices 20 to 30 percent lower than market rates.

Additionally, TracTrac equips rural youth, including women, men, and persons with disabilities, with bundled start-up kits such as the locally manufactured Tryctor and its complete set of implements, business training, and financing options like lease-to-own and credit guarantees.

The impact of TracTrac’s initiatives is already evident. In Nasarawa and Kaduna states, over 125,000 farmers have benefited from the company’s services, with 804 tractors deployed over the past six years. Participating farmers have reported average yield improvements of 15–20% and cost savings of 25–40% through shared tractor services and flexible payment plans.
