From grassroots communities to bustling urban centres, Women Radio 91.7 has emerged as a transformative platform, amplifying women’s voices, connecting them to opportunities, and addressing issues that truly matter. At the helm of this pioneering initiative is Toun Okewale Sonaiya, the CEO whose mission is simple yet profound: to put women at the heart of Nigeria’s media landscape.
“My professional journey began with a passion for media and a belief that women’s voices deserve a central place in national conversations,” Sonaiya explains. “As a broadcaster, I noticed that women’s stories were often sidelined. That gap inspired me to create Women Radio 91.7, the first radio station in Nigeria dedicated solely to women.”
Launching the station was no easy feat. Sonaiya recalls the scepticism she faced: “People asked, ‘Why a radio station for women? Will it succeed?’ But every doubt was met with the reality that women needed a platform to share their experiences. Today, Women Radio stands as evidence that empowering women benefits society as a whole.”
For Sonaiya, leadership is not only about titles or positions, it’s about impact and mentorship. “Women leaders inspire by example,” she says. “When young women see others breaking barriers and achieving goals, it motivates them to believe in their own potential. Leadership is about lifting others as you rise, creating opportunities, and being authentic.”
She emphasizes the unique qualities women bring to leadership roles: empathy, collaboration, and the ability to navigate complex social and professional dynamics. “Women often lead with emotional intelligence,” she notes. “We can read the room, understand unspoken challenges, and provide support where it’s needed. This strengthens organizations and communities, fostering environments where people feel valued and motivated.”
Building a media platform focused on women came with its hurdles. “One of the biggest challenges was gaining the trust of stakeholders,” Sonaiya recalls. “My expertise was questioned, and my vision met with scepticism simply because I was advocating for women. To succeed, I had to be persistent, proving the value of every initiative and ensuring that Women Radio was more than a station—it was a force for societal change.”
The most rewarding moments for Sonaiya are the tangible changes she has witnessed. “From urban centres to rural communities, we’ve amplified women’s voices and connected them to life-changing opportunities,” she says. “I remember a caller who shared her struggle with domestic violence. Through our platform, she accessed legal support, regained confidence, and rebuilt her life. That’s the kind of impact that makes all the effort worthwhile.”
Sonaiya is candid with young women who aspire to leadership. “Your voice matters, and your dreams are valid,” she says. “The journey won’t always be smooth, but believe in yourself, speak up, and take up space. Failures are lessons, not endpoints. Surround yourself with people who challenge you, keep learning, and never stop growing. Lead with purpose, integrity, and courage.”
As CEO, Sonaiya balances a demanding role with personal life. “Balance isn’t about perfection, it’s about choices. I prioritize what truly matters, delegate tasks when needed, and allow myself moments to recharge. Success is about achievement, yes, but also about living a meaningful life and making an impact.”
This year’s International Women’s Day theme, “Accelerate Action,” resonates deeply with Sonaiya. “Progress for women cannot wait,” she says. “It’s about taking bold, deliberate steps to break barriers and create opportunities. Through mentorship, advocacy, and policy influence, every action must lead to real change. That’s how we accelerate progress for women in Nigeria and beyond.”
Under Sonaiya’s leadership, Women Radio 91.7 has become more than a media station, it is a movement. By telling women’s stories, highlighting issues, and connecting audiences to opportunities, it transforms communities and empowers individuals to claim their space.
“Every story we share, every opportunity we create, is part of a bigger mission,” she reflects. “Women are a powerful force for progress. When their voices are amplified, society as a whole moves forward.”
Sonaiya’s vision extends beyond media. She aims to inspire a new generation of female leaders, entrepreneurs, and change-makers. Through Women Radio, she demonstrates that with passion, persistence, and purpose, women can shape narratives, influence decisions, and build a more equitable society.
