Google AI Overviews Crosses 2 Billion Mark Amid Global AI Boom

Google has revealed that its AI powered search feature, AI Overviews, now serves more than 2 billion monthly users across over 200 countries and territories. The milestone highlights how artificial intelligence is becoming a normal part of how people search and access information. This growth shows a wider shift in user behaviour. AI is no longer a niche tool. It is now widely accepted and used by everyday people to learn, explore and make decisions online.

Speaking during a virtual session, Dan Taylor, Vice President of Global Ads, said users are moving away from short keyword searches to more detailed and conversational queries. Many are also using visual search, showing how AI is making search more natural and intuitive.

Google says this shift is improving how people engage with content. AI generated summaries help users find clearer answers faster. At the same time, users who click through from these summaries tend to spend more time on websites, suggesting stronger and more meaningful engagement.

The scale of usage is significant. Google processes over 5 trillion searches each year, while Google Lens handles more than 25 billion visual searches monthly. A large number of these searches are linked to shopping or business discovery, showing how AI is also creating new opportunities for companies.

At the center of this is Gemini, Google’s AI model powering many of these features. The company says integrating Gemini into its ad systems has reduced irrelevant ads by about 40 percent, improving user experience and ad performance.

AI is also changing how content is created. Google reported a sharp rise in AI generated ads in 2025, with tools that allow businesses to create images and videos quickly. This is helping smaller brands and creators compete more effectively.

In Nigeria, AI adoption is especially strong. About 93 percent of users rely on AI to understand complex topics, while 91 percent use it for work. Around 80 percent are using AI to explore new business ideas or career paths. Public sentiment is also largely positive. Around 80 percent of Nigerians are excited about AI, showing growing trust and confidence in the technology.

Google has also expanded access to AI tools in Nigeria, including image generation features within Search and Lens. These tools allow users to create visuals simply by describing what they want, making advanced technology easier to use for students, entrepreneurs and creators.

Overall, the message is clear. AI is no longer a future concept. It is now a practical tool that people use every day. From search and learning to business and creativity, artificial intelligence is becoming an essential part of modern life.
