Kunle Elebute: The Making of a Boardroom Leader

For more than four decades, Kunle Elebute has built a distinguished career at the intersection of accounting, business advisory, corporate leadership and board governance. His professional journey is a compelling example of how expertise, relationships, curiosity and a commitment to excellence can translate into sustained leadership and impact across generations.

A Chartered Accountant, Financial and Management Consultant, Non-Executive Director and Board Committee Chair, Elebute has served clients and organisations across Nigeria, West Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa. His career has spanned professional services, financial services, consulting, privatisation, corporate finance, risk management and technology advisory.

His experience is perhaps most closely associated with KPMG, where he rose through increasingly senior leadership positions and played a significant role in the growth and transformation of the firm’s African practice.

At KPMG, Elebute led several major business units, including Financial Services Audit, Privatisation and Emerging Markets, and Financial Advisory Services. The latter encompassed a broad range of capabilities, including Deal Advisory, Management Consulting, Risk Consulting and Information Technology Advisory.

His leadership responsibilities extended well beyond individual business units. He became Senior Partner and CEO of KPMG Nigeria, subsequently serving as Chairman of KPMG West Africa and Chairman of KPMG Africa. These positions placed him at the centre of strategic decision-making across multiple markets and required him to lead professionals, develop businesses and navigate an increasingly interconnected African economy.

His influence also extended to the wider KPMG global network. Elebute served on the boards of KPMG Europe, Middle East & Africa and the KPMG Global Board, including membership of the Global Board Audit Committee.

Yet, his story is more than a list of titles and achievements. It is a story of longevity in a profession that demands intellectual discipline, adaptability and the ability to build enduring relationships.

Over the course of his career, Elebute witnessed, and participated in, the transformation of Nigeria’s professional services landscape. He was involved in the development of new advisory capabilities as opportunities emerged in the Nigerian economy, helping build practices in areas such as forensic services, financial advisory, risk consulting, management consulting and information technology advisory.

Under this expanding professional environment, the practice grew from a relatively modest organisation into a much larger pan-African business. By the time of his departure, the organisation had grown to more than a thousand professionals, with a substantial graduate recruitment pipeline and an expanding footprint across African markets.

One of the defining features of Elebute’s career has been his understanding that professional success is not built on technical competence alone. Relationships matter.

In professional services, he explains, organisations may be clients on paper, but businesses are ultimately built and served by people. Trust, credibility, reputation and the ability to understand a client’s particular circumstances therefore become as important as technical expertise.

That philosophy has remained relevant beyond his executive career.

Following retirement, Elebute transitioned into a new chapter as a non-executive director and board leader, bringing decades of experience to businesses and organisations navigating growth, succession and governance.

His post-executive career has included board responsibilities across private businesses, family-owned enterprises, healthcare, education and other organisations. Rather than viewing retirement as an endpoint, he has approached it as an opportunity to contribute at a different level, offering experience, perspective and governance while also creating room for travel, family and personal pursuits.

For Elebute, preparation has been central to this transition. His philosophy on retirement is rooted in financial independence, responsible planning and ensuring that major financial obligations, particularly housing and children’s education, are addressed before leaving active employment.

It is a philosophy that reflects the broader lessons of his career: build deliberately, prepare ahead, cultivate relationships and remain open to new opportunities.

Today, Kunle Elebute’s professional legacy extends beyond the organisations he led. It lies equally in the professionals he influenced, the businesses he helped develop, the institutions he served and the generations of leaders who can draw from his experience.

His four-decade journey demonstrates that a successful career does not necessarily have to follow the path of entrepreneurship. There is also immense opportunity in building expertise, creating value within institutions, becoming an “intrapreneur,” and ultimately using accumulated knowledge to shape organisations and communities.

For a new generation of professionals, his story offers a powerful lesson: career success is not simply about reaching the top. It is about building the capability, relationships, reputation and wisdom that make leadership meaningful when you get there.
