Chevron Nigeria Chairman, Jim Swartz Joins NESG Board

The Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG) has appointed Jim Swartz, Chairman and Managing Director of Chevron Nigeria/Mid-Africa, as a Director on its Board.

The appointment, according to the NESG, is part of its efforts to strengthen its leadership with experienced professionals who can contribute strategic expertise to its mission of promoting sustainable economic development, inclusive growth and private sector-led transformation in Nigeria.

Swartz, who assumed his current role in 2024, provides executive leadership for Chevron Nigeria Limited and its affiliates across Nigeria and the wider Mid-Africa region, including Equatorial Guinea, Cameroon, Benin, Togo and Ghana. He is based in Lagos.

In his current capacity, he oversees areas including asset strategy and performance, operational execution, stakeholder engagement, government relations and operational excellence across multiple markets.

With more than 36 years of experience at Chevron, Swartz has held technical, operational and executive leadership positions across the United States and Africa, including Louisiana, Angola, California and Texas.

His career spans extensive experience in the energy industry, particularly in upstream operations, asset development, capital projects, commercial strategy and organisational leadership.

Before becoming Chairman and Managing Director of Chevron Nigeria/Mid-Africa, Swartz served as Vice President, Capital Projects, at Chevron’s Technical Center in Houston, where he was responsible for developing technical and organisational capabilities supporting the company’s global project portfolio.

He previously served as Director for Chevron’s Deepwater Asset Class and General Manager of Asset Development for the Gulf of America Business Unit.

Swartz holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Geology with Distinction from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, which he obtained in 1988, and a Master of Science in Geology from the University of Oklahoma, obtained in 1990.

The NESG said Swartz’s appointment would bring significant expertise in executive leadership, energy operations, stakeholder engagement, commercial strategy, asset development and joint venture governance to its Board.

His experience leading complex energy operations across Nigeria and the wider Mid-Africa region is also expected to contribute to the NESG’s policy discussions around energy, investment, infrastructure, productivity, competitiveness and sustainable economic growth.

The NESG expressed confidence that Swartz’s international and regional experience, coupled with his knowledge of Nigeria’s energy sector and investment environment, would strengthen its evidence-based policy advocacy and support efforts to advance reforms aimed at accelerating Nigeria’s economic transformation.
