Charles Erewele’s story, as shared with Pabara Ebiere for Enterprise Without Borders, is a gripping tale of ambition, risk, and reinvention. From leaving Nigeria in 2003 to study engineering in the UK, navigating international projects, and returning home to face personal and professional crossroads, to ultimately choosing Canada and building a thriving career and multiple businesses, his journey is defined by resilience, bold decision-making, and the ability to turn challenges into opportunity. Along the way, he has also remained deeply committed to family, heritage, and creating lasting impact in the communities he serves. His journey offers a powerful blueprint for navigating uncertainty and achieving success while staying true to one’s values.
Charles Erewele’s story is one of ambition, resilience, and strategic vision, a journey that spans continents, industries, and the pursuit of personal and professional excellence. It is a testament to how determination, discipline, and adaptability can transform challenges into opportunities.
In 2003, Charles left Nigeria with a clear mission to study engineering at the University of Liverpool in the United Kingdom. By 2006, he had completed his bachelor’s degree and embarked on a professional path with Atkins, a global engineering firm. His early years were marked by exposure to international projects in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, including high-profile work on Palm Jumeirah amenities. Charles’s career took him across multiple UK cities including Warrington, Manchester, and London while he made his home in Grays, Essex, absorbing professional practices and multicultural experiences that would shape his worldview.
Charles later joined Shell, initially in Rijswijk, Netherlands, before returning to Nigeria. Motivated by childhood dreams from his secondary school days in Port Harcourt, he imagined the life of a successful professional in the oil and gas industry. Yet, the reality of life in Nigeria revealed unforeseen challenges. His wife struggled to adjust after years abroad, particularly with the arrival of their first child in the UK. Charles was confronted with a difficult question: should he prioritize higher pay in Nigeria or a better quality of life for his family elsewhere?
In 2014, Charles’s career opened doors in multiple countries, including the Netherlands, the United States, and Canada. He chose Canada, arriving as an expatriate with his family, supported by the presence of his sister in the country. He navigated the Canadian oil and gas sector with diligence, obtaining professional engineering licenses in Saskatchewan, Alberta, and British Columbia. While his initial salary was lower than in Nigeria, Charles notes that his family’s quality of life and financial stability now far surpass what he experienced before.
Charles’s entrepreneurial instincts led him to diverse ventures. In real estate, he began helping new immigrants navigate property purchases. What started as informal guidance to friends evolved into a licensed real estate business, allowing him to leverage his knowledge for both clients and personal investments. In engineering consulting, Charles founded Infinite Grace Incorporated, a consultancy that afforded him flexibility and independence. Today, he continues to contract with major companies such as TransCanada while balancing other business pursuits. In early childhood education, following his MBA and his wife’s nursing qualification, Charles ventured into this sector in 2023. Starting with a day home operation in their basement, they learned the business thoroughly, raised $700,000 in financing, and officially opened a school in 2024. Their first year welcomed 86 students, growing to 96 in the second year, with plans to expand to a new center accommodating 150 students and acquiring other schools in the coming years.
Charles’s journey was not without hardship. Financial pressures following his father’s death in 2004 tested his resolve. Temptations abounded for easier paths, including marrying for citizenship or abandoning studies, but Charles remained committed to integrity. With support from his brother Festus and his brother-in-law, he persevered through nights of doubt and hardship. This period forged the discipline, resilience, and moral clarity that underpin his success today.
Professionally, Charles learned to navigate cultural landscapes with nuance. In the UK, merit defined relationships; in Canada, soft skills such as engaging in local cultural conversations became essential. Yet, he balanced adaptation with authenticity, maintaining his African identity through cuisine, traditions, and interpersonal exchanges. Potlucks featuring jollof rice, fried rice, and spicy dishes became his way of connecting colleagues to his heritage while fostering mutual respect.
Charles’s philosophy blends discipline, lifelong learning, and empathy. For immigrants, he stresses continuous skill development and personal growth to avoid stagnation. For entrepreneurs, he emphasizes starting small, building credibility, gaining experience, and solving community problems before scaling. Central to his worldview is the rejection of impossible challenges, illustrated by his audacious efforts to secure a UK visa through unconventional yet principled action.
Charles balances work with a vibrant personal life. He cycles through summer months, trains indoors during winter, and pilots small aircraft for recreation. He travels extensively with his family, capturing moments and experiences that enrich their lives. As a Rotarian, he contributes to global humanitarian projects and supports family and community initiatives in Nigeria.
Rooted in Canada yet connected globally, Charles plans to transition fully into real estate and entrepreneurial ventures, expanding his early childhood education centers and exploring acquisitions. His story exemplifies the potential of disciplined, values-driven immigrants to achieve extraordinary success while maintaining cultural integrity.
Family remains central to Charles’s life. Regular visits to Nigeria, strong sibling bonds, and a partnership with his wife in business exemplify his commitment to both heritage and forward-looking enterprise. His journey from a struggling student to a multi-business owner reflects not only personal triumph but a roadmap for others seeking to navigate the complexities of the diaspora while building impactful, lasting legacies.
