How Faith Mba Became First African to Own Both Toyota and Ford Dealerships in America

From selling cars as an immigrant in the United States to building a multi-million-dollar automotive empire, Nigerian-American entrepreneur Faith Mba has redefined what is possible in one of the world’s most competitive industries. Today, as the first African to own both Toyota and Ford dealerships in the United States, his remarkable journey stands as a powerful testament to vision, resilience, and the limitless potential of African excellence on the global stage.

Few industries are as fiercely competitive as automobile retailing in the United States. The barriers to entry are enormous, requiring millions of dollars in capital, years of industry experience, the confidence of global automotive manufacturers, and an unwavering commitment to operational excellence. Yet, against these odds, a Nigerian-born entrepreneur has accomplished what no African had done before.

Faith Mba, President of FAMBA Automotive Inc., has become the first African to own both Toyota and Ford dealerships in the United States, transforming his immigrant dream into one of the most remarkable success stories in the global automotive industry. Operating from Westminster, Vermont, Mba oversees Faith’s Toyota and Faith’s Ford, a sprawling dual-brand dealership employing more than 100 professionals and serving thousands of customers across New England.

His journey did not begin in a luxurious showroom but thousands of miles away in Akwukwu, Delta State, Nigeria. Born on February 14, 1976, to Benjamin and Seline Mba, he attended the Goethe Institute of German Language and Culture in Lagos before graduating from St. Thomas College in Ibusa, Delta State. During the 1990s, he worked in his mother’s business before deciding to pursue opportunities abroad.

His first destination was the Netherlands, where life was anything but easy. While studying Dutch and German, Mba worked at a restaurant and later joined Libe Bizz Car Rental. Those years taught him resilience, adaptability, and the discipline required to succeed in unfamiliar environments. In 2004, he made another life-changing decision by relocating to the United States. That same year, he married Kristen K. Mba in New Hampshire and began working as a salesperson at Rountree Ford Kia dealership, marking the beginning of an extraordinary rise.

Rather than rushing into business ownership, Mba spent years mastering every aspect of the automotive industry. After three years in vehicle sales, he became Sales and Finance Manager at Ford Toyota in Greenfield, Massachusetts, before joining Boch Toyota in Norwood, Massachusetts, as Finance Director in 2012. Every role expanded his understanding of dealership operations, finance, customer service, inventory management, and manufacturer relations. Instead of chasing shortcuts, he quietly built the expertise that would later define his success.

That preparation culminated in 2017 when he established Faith Automotive Inc. He subsequently acquired both Toyota and Ford franchises, becoming the first African entrepreneur to own dealerships representing the two iconic automobile brands in the United States. His ambition, however, extended beyond ownership. In 2023, he unveiled an ultra-modern dual-brand dealership in Westminster, Vermont, valued at approximately $16 million.

Designed to integrate Toyota and Ford operations under one expansive facility, the dealership reflects the highest standards of modern automotive retail. The massive complex features spacious showrooms, executive sales offices, premium customer lounges, meeting rooms, drive-through service reception, quick-lube stations, advanced maintenance bays, electric vehicle charging stations, beautifully landscaped surroundings, and cutting-edge repair facilities equipped with 24 vehicle lifts.

Walking through the dealership, one quickly realizes that it is more than a showroom. It is a complete automotive ecosystem designed for efficiency and customer satisfaction. “This is where all the repairs happen,” Mba explained while touring the facility. “We can fix up to 25 vehicles at the same time. Whatever model comes into our building, we can diagnose it and repair it. Depending on the complexity of the issue, some repairs can even be completed in less than a day because we have the equipment to do so.”

Behind the service centre sits an enormous parts warehouse stocked with thousands of genuine Toyota and Ford components, enabling technicians to complete repairs quickly without unnecessary delays. The dealership currently employs approximately 100 people across sales, finance, customer service, administration, logistics, and technical operations.

Owning a franchised automobile dealership in America is among the most capital-intensive businesses in the country. Manufacturers require significant financial strength, operational expertise, sophisticated infrastructure, and strict compliance with global standards before awarding dealership franchises. For decades, African ownership remained virtually absent from the industry.

Reflecting on the significance of his achievement, Mba said, “When I joined Toyota, there were about 1,300 Toyota and Lexus dealerships across the United States. Out of those, only about 44 were owned by Black entrepreneurs. At the time I bought my dealership, there wasn’t a single African who owned a Toyota or Lexus dealership.” His acquisition therefore represented far more than personal success; it broke a barrier that had never before been crossed by an African entrepreneur.

His commitment to customer satisfaction and operational excellence has earned him national recognition. Among his most prestigious honours is Toyota’s coveted President’s Award, which he received in both 2021 and 2023, one of the highest recognitions presented to Toyota dealerships that consistently deliver exceptional customer satisfaction and business performance. His dealership has also earned a reputation as one of the top-performing Toyota operations in the United States.

Beyond business, Mba has contributed to the growth of the automotive industry through leadership roles in the National Association of Minority Automobile Dealers, the Toyota Lexus Minority Owners Dealer Association, the Ford Minority Group, the National Automobile Dealers Association, and the New England Toyota Dealers Advertising Association. In 2022, he received the Entrepreneur Excellence Award from The Voice: African News Magazine in recognition of his outstanding accomplishments.

Despite his remarkable achievements, Mba remains grounded in the principles that shaped his journey. He frequently credits diligence, consistency, discipline, and long-term vision as the foundations of his success. He also openly acknowledges his Christian faith, describing himself as a committed member of the Jehovah’s Witnesses congregation. For him, success is measured not only by profits or expansion but also by integrity, service, and creating opportunities for others.

Faith Mba’s journey represents far more than the success of a single entrepreneur. It challenges long-held assumptions about what African business leaders can accomplish on the global stage. From working restaurant shifts in Europe and selling cars in America to leading a multi-million-dollar automotive enterprise, his story reflects the power of persistence, preparation, and purpose.

For countless young Africans dreaming beyond their borders, his achievement offers an enduring reminder that global leadership is no longer defined by geography but by vision, competence, and the courage to pursue opportunities wherever they exist. Every vehicle that leaves Faith’s Toyota and Faith’s Ford in Vermont carries more than a customer’s purchase; it carries the remarkable story of a Nigerian who crossed continents, shattered industry barriers, and built a legacy that continues to inspire a new generation of entrepreneurs to dream bigger.
