Senior Pastor of Daystar Christian Centre, Pastor Sam Adeyemi, has challenged church and organisational leaders across Africa to embrace systems-driven leadership, strong governance, and deliberate succession planning, warning that too many institutions fail because they are built around personalities rather than enduring principles.
Adeyemi made the call while delivering the keynote address at the inaugural Global Church Systems Conference (GCSC), a leadership gathering that attracted more than 1,000 pastors, ministry leaders, and church administrators from across the country.
Speaking on the need for churches to become sustainable institutions, the leadership coach described the collapse of organisations after the departure of their founders as one of Africa’s most persistent leadership challenges.

“Healthy churches run on principles, not personalities. We need to build systems that will outlive founders,” Adeyemi said. “Too many churches have died with the founders. Many have even died before the founders.”
He noted that the continent’s leadership culture has often mirrored monarchical systems, where leaders wield unquestioned authority and institutions become inseparable from their founders. According to him, such an approach has limited the ability of churches, businesses, and even public institutions to achieve lasting, transgenerational impact.
Adeyemi urged leaders to shift their focus from personal influence to institutional sustainability, stressing that leadership should be measured by what remains after a leader exits the stage.
“Don’t build an empire. Build God’s kingdom,” he told participants. “The real measurement of your success will be after you have gone. So design systems, not things that will make you a hero.”
Beyond church administration, Adeyemi linked effective institutional leadership to Nigeria’s broader socioeconomic development, arguing that churches have a critical role to play in strengthening communities at a time when many public institutions are under pressure.
He pointed to challenges such as rising insecurity, unemployment, and the growing number of out-of-school children, saying the church must once again become a catalyst for education, leadership development, and social transformation rather than waiting for government intervention.
“A country, first of all, decides its vision. Then it builds the people that will build the country in the vision,” he said.
Drawing from history, Adeyemi recalled the significant role missionary organisations played in laying the foundation for Nigeria’s educational system and called on today’s churches to reclaim that legacy by investing in education, values, and human capital development.
“The church, being the light of the world, always paved the way when it came to education. The church cannot sit down now and wait for the government,” he added.

The Global Church Systems Conference was designed to equip ministry leaders with practical strategies for building resilient churches through governance structures, operational excellence, leadership development, financial accountability, and succession planning. Organisers said the conference seeks to encourage ministries to move beyond founder-centric models and adopt systems capable of sustaining growth across generations.
The conference featured several prominent Christian leaders and governance experts, including Pastor Yemi Davids, Chairman of the Lagos Chapter of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) and Founder of Global Impact Church; Pastor Godman Akinlabi, Lead Pastor of The Elevation Church; Pastor Niyi Adesanya, CEO of FifthGear Plus Consulting; Pastor Seyi Oladimeji of Church Management Consult; and members of Daystar Christian Centre’s Strategy Support Team, who shared insights on leadership, governance, organisational effectiveness, and ministry sustainability.
