By every conventional measure, Africa appeared to be waiting. Waiting for governments to fix education, create jobs, improve infrastructure and unlock prosperity through better policies. But for Iyinoluwa Aboyeji, waiting had never been an option. The Founding Partner at Future Africa, co founder of Andela and Flutterwave, builder of Itana, Africa’s first Digital Special Economic Zone, and investor in more than 100 startups argued that Africa’s transformation would come from entrepreneurs who solved problems rather than complained about them.
“I am my own government,” he said, a statement that captured the philosophy behind one of Africa’s most influential technology entrepreneurs. Long before governments embraced conversations around innovation, artificial intelligence and digital transformation, Aboyeji had already built companies that redefined African entrepreneurship.
He had not waited for policy before launching Andela, proving African software engineers could compete globally. He had not waited before helping build Flutterwave into one of Africa’s fintech giants, nor before establishing Future Africa to back entrepreneurs tackling the continent’s biggest challenges.

During the conversation, Aboyeji spoke extensively about Learn to Earn, an initiative designed to train one million Africans over the next decade and create what he described as the world’s largest AI engineering workforce. He explained that the initiative was far more than another education platform. Rather, it was a strategic effort to position Africa as a producer of artificial intelligence instead of merely a consumer of imported technology. “The goal is simple,” he said. “We need to build the world’s largest AI engineering workforce so Africa has a fighting chance in the digital age.”
He argued that artificial intelligence represented the biggest technological shift since the internet and that the formula which created opportunities over the past decade, teaching people how to write software, was no longer sufficient. According to him, the future belonged to people who understood computational thinking, could break down complex problems, collaborate with intelligent machines and apply technology to solve practical challenges. “It is no longer enough to know how to build software,” he explained. “What matters now is understanding how to work with machines.”
Aboyeji also challenged Africa’s education system, arguing that universities had been designed for a different era. While degrees had traditionally been viewed as the pathway to economic mobility, he observed that graduates increasingly struggled to secure meaningful employment, while self taught developers, creators and startup founders continued to build global careers. He maintained that memorising facts no longer created competitive advantage in an age where artificial intelligence could instantly retrieve information. Instead, he argued, the world now rewarded critical thinking and problem solving. “The world isn’t looking for someone who can tell us one plus one equals two,” he said. “It’s looking for people who can apply knowledge to do something useful.”
Rather than dismissing universities altogether, Aboyeji advocated transforming them into centres for innovation and practical learning. He revealed plans to establish Learn to Earn centres inside universities, enabling students to pursue traditional academic programmes while acquiring AI skills that would prepare them for the future economy. In his view, universities should become environments where knowledge was applied instead of merely delivered.
On artificial intelligence, Aboyeji expressed optimism at a time when many feared widespread job losses. He argued that AI could become Africa’s greatest employment opportunity because only a small percentage of Africans currently worked in knowledge intensive sectors while the continent remained the youngest in the world. If Africa developed AI talent at scale, he believed it could achieve for knowledge work what China accomplished in manufacturing. “If Africa builds the largest AI workforce in the world,” he said, “we can do for knowledge work what China did for manufacturing.”
He further argued that the winners of the AI era would not necessarily be those who owned the biggest data centres but those who possessed the knowledge to build intelligent systems. “The talent owns the knowledge,” he said. “And the knowledge determines who wins.” He dismissed concerns that Africa would become merely a source of cheap labour, insisting that open source AI models had lowered the barriers to innovation and created opportunities for African engineers to design enterprise AI systems and develop solutions for both local and international markets.
Aboyeji also offered a different perspective on Africa’s exports. Contrary to the long held emphasis on oil, minerals and agriculture, he argued that the continent’s greatest export had always been talent. “Africa’s biggest export has always been talent,” he said. He noted that Africans had consistently generated enormous value in sports, entertainment, technology and business around the world, but lamented that the continent had historically exported raw human potential rather than refined knowledge products. Artificial intelligence, he argued, presented an opportunity to reverse that trend by enabling Africa to export digital products, intelligent systems and AI agents instead of people.
Throughout the discussion, Aboyeji repeatedly stressed the importance of scale. He argued that Africa’s greatest limitation was not talent but ambition, noting that global competitiveness depended on producing skilled people in massive numbers. He pointed to India’s investment in engineering talent as evidence that countries capable of building talent at scale eventually shaped entire industries, insisting that Africa possessed an even greater demographic advantage if it chose to act decisively.

Although he acknowledged that governments could support innovation through better infrastructure, connectivity and enabling policies, Aboyeji maintained that entrepreneurs could not afford to wait for political action. Reflecting on his entrepreneurial journey, he noted that neither Andela nor Flutterwave had depended on government support. “I didn’t wait for government before Andela. I didn’t wait before Flutterwave. I’ve been doing this for twelve years without government,” he said, adding that while partnership with government would be welcome, dependence would be a mistake.
As the conversation drew to a close, Aboyeji argued that Africa stood at a defining moment. The continent, he said, could either continue exporting raw commodities while importing innovation or invest boldly in entrepreneurs, engineers and builders capable of creating the technologies that would shape the future. In his view, Africa’s future would not be determined by policies alone, but by people willing to solve difficult problems, master artificial intelligence and build globally competitive enterprises at scale.
